SENT FOR TRIAL
FALSE PRETENCE CHARGE On a charge of false pretences. Frank Markovini. in the Police Court today, elected to stand his trial before a jury in the Supreme Court, and was committed to appear at the next session. Markovini, a bricklayer, aged 27, pleaded not guilty to obtaining £4 17s 6d and goods valued at 12s 6d from George Albert Ashley, by means of a valueless cheque, drawn by Aif. Larfrankie. Evidence was given by George A. Ashley to the effect that on Christmas Eve accused had purchased a shirt for 12s and tendered a cheque for £5 10s. drawn by Alf. Larfrankie, in favour of Milo Kactelo. When asked to do so, accused endorsed the cheque iu tile latter name, and received £4 17s 6d in change. The cheque was returned marked “no account.” Tony Bakulich, a restaurant keeper, identified two cheque forms that he said had been stolen from his chequebook from his rooms during Decern ber, during which time accused frequently visited the premises. Detective Mills said that accused at first denied ail knowledge of the cheque, and gave a sample of his handwriting. Arrested later, accused denied cashing the cheque and denied ail knowledge of it.
