REPLACES 1,000 MEN
HUGE DEVICE TO HANDLE ENGLISH AIRSHIPS FACILITATES OPERATION LONDON, Tuesday. Two enormous claws, capable of doing the work of 1,000 human beings with precision, are now being prepared at Cardington air station. Mounted on a trolley which will run on rails embedded in concrete, the claws are to be used for handling the airships RIOO and RlOl.
The device will move an airship from its shed even in a stiff wind, whereas hitherto that operation has had to be delayed until there has been an absolute calm, as the 500 men at present employed cannot drag an airship from its shed when it is windy. Also, it is hoped, the new claws will avert the danger of the hull of ci'her airship crashing against the girders of the shed. This happened to the RIOO last week when the elevator was broken and the airship’s Right to Canada was delayed in consequence.
