RUGBY CONGRESS
SOUTH AFRICA WILL NOT VISIT NEW ZEALAND NOT NECESSARY NOW Reed. 10.30 a.m. CAPETOWN. Tues. The South African Rugby Union decided to refuse an invitation to be represented at the proposed conference of Rugby unions at Wellington, New Zealand, in August, on the grounds that recent developments appeared to make the conference less necessary, and as Home unions were not represented. An invitation has been issued by th» New Zealand Rugby Union to the English. Scottish. Irish. South African and New South Wales Rugby Unions to attend a round-table conference in Wellington on August 4. The assembly is intended to represent the Empire in character. The New South Wales delegate has already been appointed and Mr. W. Baxter, manager of the British team, which will then be touring New Zealand, will probably represent England, while representative players of Scotland and Ireland may be invested with delegates’ powers. The aim of the conference is understood to be uniformity of rules.
