KILLED IN BRAWL
MAN WHO MURDERED MATE GETS 15 YEARS MANSLAUGHTER VERDICT SYDNEY, Tuesday. The second trial took place today ot Paul Minel, aged 50, charged with the murder of James Smith,' or Sorensen, at Narrabi, New South Wales, on November 11, 1929. At the first trial, on April 16, the jury failed to agree. Accused today was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment. The Judge said he could not understand bow the jury could have arrived at a verdict of manslaughter. He described Minel as a singularly callous criminal.
According to Miners previous statement, in the course of a drunken quarrel in an old hut Smith attempted to strike him with a brick or stone, which Minel wrested from him. He struck Smith with it, and Smith fell and appeared to go to sleep. A short time afterward, Minel said, he saw him reach for a rifle. A scuffle ensued. Minel seized tile rifle, which exploded, and Smitii fell. Minel secured an axe and cut up the body and placed the parts in bags and dumped them in a creek.
