Obituary

MR. W. J. GRAY One of the pioneers, of the Bay of Plenty district, Mr. 'William John Gray, of Katikati. died at his home on Saturday night. Mr. Gray, who was in his eighty-second year, was born In Belfast, Ireland, and served his apprenticeship as a carpenter with th‘-well-known firm of Harland and Wolff. He. with Mrs. Gray, arrived In Auckland by the ship Yalumba in 1875, and after spending two or three years at made his home at Katikati, throwing in his lot with the late Mr. G. Vesey Stewart. Apart from a few years spent in Waihi Mr. Gray resided in Katikati for nearly half a century. He was always very actively associated ■with public life and all movements making for the betterment of Katikati and the Bay of Plenty as a whole. Mr. Gray was one of the foundation members of the Katikati Agricultural and Pastoral Society, the promoter of the public library at Tauranga, and for many years a member of the Tauranga County Council, holding his seat continually until he resigned to take up the position of county engineer, which he held until two years ago. Mr. Gray is survived by a grown-up family of three sons and four daughters. Mrs. Gray predeceased him about eight years ago. MR. HENRY HEWIN Mr. Henry Hewin, who died last week at the age of 72, was a wellknown settler in the Te Aroha district. Born in Kent. Mr. Hewin arrived in New’ Zealand in 1875, and shortly afterward married Miss Alice Heard, formerly of Southampton, England. For several years he was engaged m contracting in Auckland, and, later, he took up farming at Waiheke Island and at Manawaru. Since his retirement Mr. Hewin has lived in Te Aroha. He is survived by his wife and by three daughters. Mrs. G. Pearson. Whangarei. Miss R. Hewin, Auckland, Mrs. Sowerby, Te Aroha. MR. W. R. WILEY The death occurred in the Opotikl Public Hospital on Sunday of Mr. W. R. Wiley, aged 36. Mr. Wiley suffered for many years from injuries received in the Great War. He was a member of the Main Body of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, leaving with the third reinforcements. He* took part in the Gallipoli campaign. In the Suvla Bay landing he was badly wounded and on August S was reported missing. Two months later he was reported killed. Mr. Wiley was well known and carried on business in Opotiki. He will bo given a military funeral. MR. J. H. HANCOCK Mr. John H. Hancock, who died in Dunedin on Sunday night at the aga of 69 years, was for many years connected with the public life of that city. He was a member of the Caversbam Borough Council and later of the Dunedin City Council. During a period as chairman of the Ocean Beach Domain Board and of the Reserves Committee, he gave valuable service to the city, and there are many beauty spots that are a permanent memorial to his work. Mr. Hancock was also connected with several societies and organisations.

DR. W. M. CLOW The death has occurred in Scotland of Dr. W. M. Clow, who was a son of Mr. Andrew Clow, the builder of the present St. James’s Presbyterian Church, Auckland. Dr. Clow was lately principal and professor of practical training and Christian ethics at Trinity College. Glasgow. He was born in Glasgow in 1853 and spent his early years in New Zealand. MR. W. GORDON The death has occurred of Mr YVm. Gordon at Rotorua. He was an old identity in the district. In his younger days he was a Government surveyor. He leaves a widow, one son, Mf. A.
