NIGHTGOWN IN FLAMES
CHILD FATALLY BURNED VERDICT OF ACCIDENT The opinion that the child had been playing with a lighted candle and had set her nightdress alight was expressed today by the coroner, Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in returning a verdict of accidental death in the case of Norma Constance Wilson, aged 4J years, who died in Auckland Hospital yesterday from burns. The father, Wilfred H. Wilson, living at 7 Mackelvie Street. Grey Lynn, said that after breakfasting about 4.45 a.m. he returned to the bedroom with a lighted candle, which, however, he extinguished before leaving, and also took away Ihe matches from the room. When he saw the child later in hospital she told him she had lit the candle. Mary Ann Houseman, grandmother of the dead child, said about 7.15 a_m. she heard the little girl scream and saw the child at the top of the stairs with her nightgown alight. Blankets were wrapped round the child to extinguish the flames, but she was badly burned about the body and face. It appeared the child had taken the candle, lighted it and placed it on the bed, for witness found the bedding burning and the candle alight in the centre of the bed. In the opinion of Dr.' H. L. Gould, death was caused by shock following burns
