In the Market Place

EGG PRICES LOWER BANANA SUPPLIES DUE With the passing of the Easter season there has been a much smaller demand at the City Markets for eggs, and the prices of all first quality grades have fallen by three pence a dozen. There is possibility of an even further drop shortly. Farmers’ butter, on the other hand, is expected to rise slightly later in the week, when an increase is expected in factory butter prices, in sympathy with the London market. The demand for bananas at today’s auctions in the City Markets was very firm. The market is still short, the Maui Pomare, which arrived in port this morning, having only brought in about 100 cases. However, a good shipment of Samoan bananas is expected by the Waipahi on Thursday, and the market will be easier. There is the usual demand for apples and pears. Oranges are slightly higher. Larger supplies of tomatoes, with the demand on a par with that of last week, have led to slightly lower prices. Quotations are lower for outdoor grapes from Te Kauwhata, which are nearly at an end, but both quality and prices of indoor grapes remain much the same. The market is very heavily supplied with cauliflowers, cabbages, beans, onions and pumpkins, especially, all green vegetables in season being in good supply. The demand throughout is fair, prices being similar to those of last week.
