MAN KILLED BY TRAIN

STRUCK BY ROTORUA EXPRESS FATALITY AT WIRI John Maher, aged 54, who lived at Nikau Road, Otahuhu, was killed by the Rotorua express at Wiri yesterday. Mr. Maher, who was employed as a permanent casual worker by the Railway Department, was working on the track. He was employed in a ganu of seven men, and when he went to one side of the line to let the express pass the other members of the gang went to the other side. Apparently, he tried to recross the line, and was struck by the engine and carried for some distance. He was killed instantly. The body was. taken to Otahuhu by the express and removed to the morgue. The inquest was opened at the Otahuhu Court this morning by the district coroner, Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M. After evidence of identification was taken the inquest was adjourned sine die.
