OLD THAMES PIONEER!

REUNION IN SCOTS HALL MEMORIES OF EARLY DAYS Memories of early days on the Thames goldfields were revived on Saturday, when pioneers of the district met at Scots Hall at the third reunion, organised by the Old Thames Girls’ Association. Many pioneers, along with their friends, assembled early at the hall, the interior of which had been decorated. A musical programme was followed by afternoon tea, served by a committee under Mrs. Dawson, but it was the quiet talks with old friends around the small tables that was most popular, and went to make the reunion a success. A company of Girl Guides was in attendance to conduct the visitors to their seats. The reunion was opened with a hymn, followed by a prayer by the Rev. E. R. Harries. In reviewing the year’s progress, the secretary referred to the death of several members, and also to the successes of many who had taken a prominent part in the association’s activities. Among these were Miss Jessie Metherington. who has been appointed chief woman inspector of secondary schools. Others were Mr. W. Donovan, Chief Government Analyst, Dr. Kenneth Phillips, and Mr. Barry Coney, well-known in Auckland musical circles, Major Wilkes, Mr. Felix Grigs and Mr. Leslie Andrew. Five Thames boys had become medical men, being Drs. R. and O. Hetherington, Roy and Harold Lange and Trevor Miller.

Apologies for absence had been received from the Mayor and Mayoress, Archdeacon Evans and the Rev. Mr. Nixon, of New Plymouth, and from Mr. F. Weston. The programme included items by Mrs. Parry and Miss James, Miss Griffiths, Master Parry, Miss Adams, Miss Murphy, Mrs. Pilkington and Miss Lockwood. A vote of thanks was passed to all who had helped to make the reunion a success.
