REGIONAL PLANNING
INQUIRY OPENS NEXT WEEK BOUNDARIES OF AUCKLAND On Monday, May 5, a public inquiry will be started by a committee of the Town-Planning Board. The inquiry will be held in the Auckland City Council chambers, and its purpose will be to determine the boundaries of a regional planning area including Auckland City and its surroundings. Southern centres are at present holding similar inquiries, and evidence is being heard from all the local bodies concerned. Two conferences have been held with the object of putting into effect the provisions of the Town-Planning Amendment in Auckland. One was held last November, and was attended bv 40 delegates representing town and country authorities. The matter of cooperation was referred back to the local authorities pending a further conference. This was held in February, but the conference rejected by a small majority the Auckland City Council’s motion that the proposed region should extend from Rodney Council to Franklin Council. The area included 1.955 square miles. The Town-Planning Board proposes ultimately to zone the whole of Xew Zealand. It lias wide powers under the Act, including the power to appoint a person to represent any local body failing to participate, and to make it liable for its share of the expenses. The primary object of the forthcoming inquiry is to enable the local bodies concerned to obtain the information necessary in determining the boundaries of the regional area, and the constitution of a regional committee to c out Ike purposes of the Act.
