CRASH INTO BUS

INTOXICATED DRIVER S EXPLOIT FINE OF £25 IMPOSED From Our Oion Correspondent WHANGAREI, Today. In the Whangarei Magistrate’s Court this morning, before Mr. G. N. Morris, S.M., Leonard Cluard was charged with being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a car and with the conversion of a car valued at £l5O. Senior-Sergeant O’Grady said that the car had been taken from Vine Street and the owner of the car, Gilbert Mahunga, had jumped on the running-board but jumped off again. The car continued to Walton Street and crashed into a bus, damaging both vehicles. Constable Norris said he arrested ■ accused, who was drunk. -Counsel for accused, Mr. L. A. Johnson, pleaded that accused was so drunk that he did not know what he was doing. However, the prosecution reminded him that drunkenness was not an excuse for crime. The magistrate said that as far as the conversion of the car was concerned he was prepared simply to enter a conviction. However, on the other charge, he had a duty to perform to the public and could not treat accused leniently. Accused was fined £25 and ordered to pay costs 15s and his licence was cancelled for 12 months.
