“BOOKIES" PAY £575
HEAVY FINES IMPOSED IN WELLINGTON FOUR MEN CONVICTED Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. Fines totalling £575 were imposed by Mr. E. Page, S.M., on four men who pleaded guilty to charges of bookmaking. Harry Corner, aged 38, a barman, charged with using the prtvate bar of the Carlton Hotel as a common gaming-house, was fined £SO, In default two months’ gaol. Robert Henry Jones, who had been . previously convicted, was fined the substantial sum of £3OO. Ralph Ellis Thompson, aged 50, who had also been previously convicted, was fined £2OO. Edward George Munns, aged 50, was fined £25, in default two months’ gaol. The default in the cases of Jones and Thompson was fixed at three and two months respectively. A fifth man, Stanley William Findlay, aged 41, elected to be tried by a jury and was remanded to May 7 on bail.
