FROZEN MEAT PRICES
SMITHFIELD QUOTATIONS LONDON, Saturday. The weekly quotations for the undermentioned classes of frozen meats are based on actual sales of wholesale quantities of carcases of mutton or lamb, or of quarters of beef delivered to Smithfield market and/or ex London stores. They are compiled by the Quotations Committee, Smithfield. To arrive at the equivalent ex ship values one farthing a pound should be deducted from the prices quoted below. Quotations given represent the average for the week and are not selected lines, but for parcels fairly representative of the bulk of the shipments now on offer. The Bradford wool trade continues optimistic, in spite of the prolonged wages dispute, and as many spinners are resuming a large consumption of tops is assured. Continental inquiries remain good. Experts, however, express the opinion that it must be long before colonial wools will again fetch really high prices, and pastoralists must reduce the cost of production to the utmost. INTEREST RATES IN VICTORIA A pood Indication of the tightness of money in Australia is supplied by the Savings Bank of Victoria. Interest on advances under the Savings Bank housing scheme has been raised from 63 per cent, to 74 per cent. This will apply only to new advances.
