WOMAN “BOOKIE” FINED
CONSTABLE’S DISCOVERY WHAT OPEN DOOR REVEALED Press Association WHANGAREI, Today. A woman bookmaker, Dorothy Davenport White, was fined £lO and costa in the Magistrate’s Court today on a charge of carrying on the business of bookmaker. On Easter Saturday evening a constable on his rounds, noticing an open door, investigated and discovered that an interior door leading to White’s office was also open. He saw betting charts on the table. He and another constable then made a search and took away the documents they found. Later, they informed White of what they had done, and sne admitted having taken bets on the Waikato races. Counsel for defendant held that the constable had acted illegally in searching -the premises without a warrant. The Magistrate said that if the constables had done wrong no doubt the department would deal with them. In any case, White’s admission was sufficient evidence to secure a conviction.
