EARLY SETTLER DEAD

LATE MRS. C. HOLLOWS FIFTY YEARS IN DOMINION One of the passengers by the first direct steamer from England to New Zealand, Mrs. Catherine Hollows, has died at the home of her daughter. Mrs. AT Boag, Beach Hoad, Point Chevalier. at the age of 91. Mrs. Hollows was born in Asliton-on-Jlakefield. Lancashire, on January 27 1539, a daughter of the late Mr. James Hill. In 1861 she married the late Mr. James Hollows, a mining engineer and contractor of Bolton. Her husband came out to Australia 15 years later, eventually crossing to the Dominion, where he was joined by his wife and family of seven children in IS7 Q Thev arrived by the Dutch ship Stadhaarle'm. the first direct steamer The family settled in Otago, later moving to Westport. Mr. Hollows was drowned about 20 years ago in a boatins accident, his wife then coming t Auckland to live with her daughter. Of her nine children, seven are still living—one daughter and six sons. They axe Mrs. M. Boas, Joseph Hollows, of Auckland; Mr. John Hoilows, of Hukerenui, Bay of Islands: Mr. James Hollows, of Catlin s Ri\er, Otago; Mr. S. Hollows, of Helensburgh, New South Wales; Mr. T. Hollows, of Whangarei; and Mr. W. Hollows. of Fairfield. Otago. There are 37 grandchildren and 3S groat-grand-children.
