WORKERS’ DWELLINGS

DEPRECIATION OF 22£ PER CENT. CITY VALUER’S ESTIMATE “Does the report of the City building inspector on workers’ dwellings advise that the council reduce the owners’ liability to the council by 22i per cent, or other percentage?” The foregoing was a question put to the City Council by Cr. J. R. Lundon. It had reference to the investigations now in progress by a subcommittee of the Finance Committee into the workers’ dwellings at Grey Lynn. The town clerk, Mr. J. S. Brigham, reported that a departmental report for the information of the sub-com-mittee was obtained by him from the City Valuer and the chief building inspector, wherein it was mentioned that they considered the dwellings had dropped 22 £ per cent, since they were erected .six years ago. The report had not yet been dealt with by the sub-committee. The owner of one of the houses, who has let the dwelling to another, asked when letters he had-written to the council requesting relief from overdue mortgage payments would be answered. The present occupier, a woman, had complained to him that council officers were able to enter the house with a spare k€.'y, ■which should be handed to the woman. This occupier also protested in a letter to the council about the key. Khe contended, also, that rent she was paying direct to the council should be paid to the owner of the house. She would pay no more rent until she heard from ti % council advice as to whom she was to pay in future. The woman also asked for the spare key.

The letters were received and referred to the sub-committee.

In reply to Cr. Lundon the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon, said there was still no finality about the question of the dwellings. The sub-committee would in due course Issue its report, and the whole question would be “cleaned up in one act.”
