SUSPICIOUS FIRES

TWO OUTBREAKS IN WOOD YARDS ARSON SUSPECTED Two attempts were made to burn down City coal and wood yards on Thursday evening. The first attempt was made on the Pukemiro Collieries, Ltd.’s wood depot in Porter Avenue, near Eden Terrace. A boy passing the premises saw smoke emerging from a pile of 500 tons of tea-tree stacked in the yard. He notified a grocer on the corner of the street, and the two of then put the fire out. A bundle of newspapers had been lighted and placed beneath the pile of wood. No damage was done at all. Another attempt was made at the yard of the Glen Afton Collieries, Ltd., opposite. The alarm was given shortly after S o'clock on Thursday evening, and the City and Mount Eden brigades turned out. The cause of the alarm was found to be a pile of newspapers thrust into a pile of 700 tons, of tea-tree, about seven feet from the ground. The papers failed to set the pile alight, and no damage was done. The attempts are not thought to be the work of children.
