STRUGGLE HOPELESS
WORKERS CAN SEE FUTILITY OF COAL STRIKE LOWER WAGES COMING SYDNEY, Wednesday. The first development in the coalmining dispute for a week occurred today. The officials of the Enginedrivers and Firemen’s Association issued a manifesto advising their members to accept a reduction in wages. They said the dispute had reached such a hopeless position that victory was only possible with a change in the social order, which was not yet in sight. Moreover, appeals to other unions for help had fallen on deaf ears. One organisation with 30,000 members had not contributed one penny so far.
