GENERAL ELECTION?
LABOUR THINKS NOT POLITICAL PROPHET SPEAKS “i deny that there will be a general election. I believe that we shall see an understanding between Reform and United to keep Labour out.” This was the prophecy of Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P., who was speaking at Ilemuera last evening in furtherance of the'campaign of Mr. T. Bloodworth, Labour candidate for Parnell. Amplifying his opinion, Mr. Jordan excluded the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, from any rapprochement, which he was sure the majority of tlie United Party would welcome. “There is no doubt in the minds of members of the House that the Uuited I’arty used Sir Joseph Ward as a means for getting into Parliament,” declared Mr. Jordan. “There is also no doubt that certain United members would turq Sir Joseph down now that they have got into the House,” he added. In introducing the candidate, Mr. M. J. Savage, M.P., deputy-leader of the Parliamentary Labour Party, said that some would have them believe that, if Mr. Bloodworth were elected, the Government would have to “throw up the sponge,” as it would not be able to carry on. “It is just as well to remember, then, that we have been going on for about 50 years without a dissolution before the usual time,” remarked Mr Savage. “Whatever happepns at tbit by-election cannot alter the fact that some party has to help the Govern ment if the Government is to carrv on, and I leave it to you to say wha: party that will be.”
