“GAS WAR” NONSENSE

“There is more nonsense talked about gas in the next war than anything else,” said Major F. A. Freeth. a member of the headquarters staff of the Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd., in a lecture on the chemistry of war at the Royal United Service Institution, London. If the most powerful gas shell ever invented were to burst within 75 yards of you, unless you were hit by splinters you would be perfectly safe, he said. Gas is a potent weapon in restricted ranges, but I refute the idea that science possesses poison gases of great range and killing power. There is, in fact, a large body of opinion which believes that the only really effective gas is mustard gas.
