AUCKLAND WINS SHIELD
UNIVERSITY CHAMPIONS EASTER TOURNAMENT ENDS The Auckland University College is now assured of victory in the New Zealand Inter-University Tournament Shield, for which contests have been in progress here during the Easter vacation. A win outright in the men’s doubles yesterday, and the elimination of all but Aucklanders in both the men’s singles and the women’s doubles, has placed the college in an unassailable po_sition regarding the tennis challenge cup, on which the shield contest depended. The tournament shield is awarded to the university college securing tll» largest number of points in championship contests in athletics, boxing, tennis, shooting, swimming, and basketball. The contest was begun in 1923, Otago holding the trophy until 1926, when Canterbury secured a victory. Auckland was supreme in 1927, when the tournament was last held here, and again in 1928. Victoria won the shield last year. Besides winning the major trophy, Auckland has carried off the basketball shield, held since its inception in 1927; the Haslam Shield for shooting,' also held last year; the tennis challenge cup, which has remained here since 1927; and the newly instituted swimming shield, which contest replaced the debate this year. She will also hold the “wooden spoon,” insignia of the poorest performance in field sports. Auckland has never won the athletics shield, although the contest has been held almost every year since 1902. Canterbury wrested this trophy from Victoria College, Wellington, this year, defeating the holders by two points. The other university trophy, the boxing shield, was held last year jointly by Otago and Victoria, but has now been secured by the latter with an overwhelming advantage. Other individual trophies have been xvon as follow: De la Mare Challenge Cup, for onemile championship.—E. B. E. Taylor (Canterbury). Sievwright Cup, for mile walk.—E. B. Mackenzie (Canterbury). Trevor Hull Memorial Shield, for high jump.—Morris (Canterbury). Athol Hudson Challenge Cup, for three miles flat.—E. B. E. Taylor (Canterbury). Relay Cup.—Victoria. Boxing Medal, for most scientific display—A. M. McDonald (Victoria). The visitors will leave for the South by express this evening.
