WENDAY INJURED
MAY NOT RACE AGAIN A promising ’chaser, the Te Rapa representative, Wenday, is in such a bad way that it is feared she will need to be retired from the Turf. The trouble is located in a knee, which she struck badly when she fell in the Mangere Steeplechase on the first day at Ellerslie. A schooling bout over Ellerslie country previously gave out sufficient encouragement to suggest that Wenday would be a very payable proposition in the depleted steeplechase ranks, especially as she has more than average pace and is a good stayer. Therefore the support accorded the mare in her engagement was entirely justified, but her numerous admirers must have been greatly disappointed when she fell at the initial fence, after going out several lengths in front immediately they were sent on the way.
Wenday had a ton of pace on when she rose at the obstacle, and she struck the fence with such force that it is obvious she will be out of the game for an indefinite period. It is a slice of bad luck for trainer P. Brady, but the fact that Star Comet won both hurdle races at the meeting, would to some extent condone for Wenday’s loss.
