TIME HE WON

IN THE SHADE DUE GOOD RACE AT ELLERSLIE In the Shade was an unlucky horse on the first day of the Elle frslie meeting, and more fortunate in the running of the President’s Handicap he* might have beaten Star Stranger. Right -from the outset the Austral-ian-bred gelding met trouble through another horse cannoning into him, with the result that he was fetching up the rear inside the first furlong, a position that Bagby was content to occupy until they came round the bend. Then with the pressure on In the Shade got a nice run on the rails, and he shot forward in determined fashion, but the post beat him, and a dead-heat for third was his portion of the stake. Nevertheless, the performance was a distinctly pleasing one and quite in keeping with his form at Te Rapa in the previous week, when he ran Corinax to a close decision in the Storey Memorial Cup. In the Shade has confounded his critics and has failed to run a bad race, and in his present form he will prove a big danger in the Foley' Memorial at Avondale on Saturday'. A glance over his recent efforts proves illuminating; Won Wanganui Cup, 12 miles, carried 7.13 J; unplaced Earle Stakes Handicap, miles, carried 8.11; third Te Aroha Cup, 1 mile 3 furlongs, carried 9.0; second Storey' Memorial Cup, IS miles, carried 8.9; and dead-heat third President’s Handicap, IS miles, carried 8.4.
