SEA COB GETS IT
WHANGAREI STAKE DISTRICT COMMITTEE’S DECISION It is poor compensation for backers of Sea Cob the first day at Whangarei three \%eeks ago to learn now that this horse has been awarded first place, and Owairaka, the actual winner, relegated to second place. It was a good finish between these two horses, and although the majority thought Sea Cob had won narrowly. the decision went in Owairaka"s favour by half a head. The latter paid a royal price, but Sea Cobs backers lost over 25 per cent, of their investments. The Auckland District Committee yesterday heard an appeal by w # Montgomery, owner of Se«t Cob. against the action of the Whangarei Racing Club_ in awarding first prizemoney (£105) in the Waipu Handicap to Owairaka. It was found that Owairaka had interfered with the chances of Sea Cob, who finished second. The appeal was upheld, and the race awarded to the owner of Sea Cob Owairaka being placed second. Seen by Stipendiary After the running of the Waipu Handicap on the first day of th*> Whangarei Racing Club’s meeting on April 3, an allegation was made by the stipendiary steward, Mr. A. Gordon, that K. Gill, rider of Owairaka. had struck Sea Cob over the head with his whip in the straight. The allegation was brought under Rule 1, Part XXX. of the Rules of Racing, and after a lengthy deliberation the committee decided to take no action. Rule 1, Part XXX. of the Rules of Racing reads as follows: The decision of the judge declaring a horse to have won. or to bo placed, shall be final as determining the order in which tho horses have passed the post; provided that the judge may correct any n:\take within ten minutes. If in tue opinion of the stewards, a horse has interfered, through no fault of his rider, with the chance of any horse placed by the judge, the stewards may. if they think fit. place such horse immediately after any horse whose chance has been interfered with.*’
