EASY ELLERSLIE WIN

Cylinder may never be another Star Stranger, but he won the Great North - crn Champagne Stakes very comfortably and was never off the bit once he hit the front. His win was so impressive that it was with regret one thought of Gesture's absence, for unquestionably the Liraond colt would have thoroughly tested the Trentliam crack. Bettors took a firm stand in regal d to Cylinder’s superiority and his investments amounted to £3,641. He drew five marble, and was always within good striking distance, coming round the bend with but Hard Words and Wild Time near him. Inside the distance it was soon apparent that Cylinder had the race in safe keeping and few easier wins were recorded during the meeting. Some of the glamour comes off the performance when the weak field is considered, but Cylinder’s effort was a very smooth one and he did everything that was asked of him. Now that Star Stranger is on the wane—he is at an age where deterioration rather than improvement can be expected—perhaps the two-year-old will be the sheet-anchor of J. H. Jefferd’s stable next season, when the Derbies and .other rich three-year-old classics are under discussion. Of the babies seen out this term none has shown better credentials for the classics over a distance than Mr. A. B. Williams’s colt, and in all his efforts he has appealed as a bright prospect for the longer races, while his breeding also suggests stamina. He is bred on choice lines, being by Limond from the imported mare Cymene. J. H. Jefferd did not remain for the Avondale meeting on Saturday, and no doubt Cylinder goes into retirement until racing opens next season when he will again be prepared to measure strides with Gesture. Then another story may be unfolded.
