BOWSER STATION NUMBERS
PROPORTIONS IN AMERICA
It is computed that over £200,000,000 is invested in petrol service stations in U.S.A. the total number of stations being 320,000. Most of this capital belongs to the various oil and petrol corporations. The number of Bowser petrol pumps in operation in that country is officially given as 610,000, or a petrol pump to every 43 automobiles on the road, and the average quantity of petrol used per annum a vehicle is 472 gallons, which represents an annual output a Bowser of 20,449 gallons a year; or only 393 gallons a week. On this basis it is little wonder that much of the capital invested in petrol stations in America is earning no profit, and many of the stations are being closed up. There are so many of them that if their roads were arranged end to end in one long road, stations would be found just a trifle over a mile apart. In view of the large increase in the number of Bowser pumps in Australia and New Zealand during the past year or two, it would appear that considering the comparatively small number of motor vehicles on our roads the average annual output a petrol pump must be far less than in America.
