HUDSON GOES EIGHT
INTERESTING ENGINEERING FEATURES Hudson is now an eight, and its makers are emphatic in their claim that the car is an entirely new type in motordom. The new car, although it supersedes all Hudson achievements of the past, sells in Hudson’s well-known price range. Two prices are available, the standard wheel base being 119 inches, and the larger size 126 inches. While the two chassis differ in length, to accommodate, standard or de luxe bodies, in all minor details they are identical as far as design and fundamental structural features are concerned. The power plant consists of an eight-cylinder L-head motor, mounted with four-point suspension, in rubber cushions. With a bore of 22 inches, and a stroke of 4£ inches—giving a piston displacement of 213.8 cubic inches —and with the high compression ratio of 5.78, the engine delivers 80 h.p. There are two separate cylinder heads, each for four cylinders, an arrangement which facilitates service work on pistons, valves, and other motor parts. The engine throttle and the carburetter heat control valves are interconnected in such a manner that, although there is a quick warm-up, no undue overheating of the motor takes place in running with wide open throttle. The ignition system incorporates several interesting features. One of them is a dual interrupter with two separate breaker arms, and interrupter points. The breakers are so connected that they distribute through two sets of points the current ordinarily passing through a single set. This greatly reduces wear, and prevents the burning of points.
