Fine Racing

OPENING DAY AT ELLERSLIE J. H. Jefferd’s Three Wins PEGAWAY’S meritorious win in the Easter Handicap, fine riding on H. Gray’s part and the turning out of three winners from J. EL Jeft’erd’s stable—these were features of the opening day’s sport of the Auckland Racing Club’s inpptin<T «f Tcllprsdip on hJatnrrlav

An overcast sky did not promise well for the opening of the Easter carnival, but fortunately rain held off and with half the programme disposed of, threatening weather was succeeded by sunshine. The usual representative attendance from all parts of the Dominion was present, and the crowd was estimated at 21,000. Racing was spirited and close finishes in several events were witnessed. That good horse Pegayvay accounted for Toxeuma and Silvermine in the Easter Handicap fairly comfortably, and joined the select band which has carried big weights to victory in this event. Both horse and rider were paid a tribute on returning to scale. As generally expected, Cylinder proved the best of the two-year-olds, and he won convincingly, furnishing positive proof that he would have troubled even Gesture. H. Gray was right at the top of his form, and it was a notable achievement to be only once out of a place in six mounts at a metropolitan meeting such as Ellerslie. Another to come in for his share of kudos, too, was the Hawke’s Bay trainer, J. H. Jefferd, who sent five horses to the post for three wins, a second and a fourth. Sporting folk were in betting mood and the totalisator receipts showed an increase of £ 2,951 7 os, the staff handling £74,732, as compared with £71,750 10s on the corresponding day last year. Rain practically on the eve of the meeting left the course and its surroundings in perfect order, and fast times were recorded in the majority of cases: in fact, record times were established in the Great Northern Oaks and Brighton Hurdles. Notes on the racing with details follow: President’s Handicap A dozen were taken out of the President’s Handicap, leaving eight to go to the post, and there was solid support for Star Stranger! £2,073, and In the Shade, £1,537, with a drop to R.oyal Doulton. £822. They all went away well, Count Palatine, Star Stranger and Royal Doulton racing past the stands on terms, closely attended by Kawoinga, Gemlight, In the Shade,, Desert Glow and Paitonu. Once into the back stretch Kawainga went to the front, to lead Count Palatine, Star Stranger, Royal Doulton (together) and Gemlight, and In the Shade, who were also abreast. Count Palatine joined Kawainga passing across the top and they led into the straight followed by Desert Glow, Star Stranger and Royal Doulton. At the distance Star Stranger had worn down the leaders and maintaining his effort came home to win by a neck. Count Palatine was placed second a head away, and In the Shade and Desert Glow shared third honours, although it appeared as if they were second ; l 0 third respectively. Next to cross the line were Kawainga., Royal Doulton. Paitonu and Gemlight. Great Northern Oaks Seven faced the starter in the G.N. Oaks, and backers declared for Eaglet (£2,986), wTto was at a cramped price in the quotations above Duellona, £1,654, and My Own, £1,625. Eaglet, on the rails, was momentarily in charge, but with a furlong and a-half covered —passing the stands —Valreina had a slight advantage over Biddy Comet, with Eaglet, Duellona, My Own, Ducky Alice, and Tambourine following. Biddy Comet was in charge for a time along the back, but Valreina was again in front crossing the top, leading My Own, Eaglet, Ducky Alice, Tambourine, and Duellona. My Own took up the running coming to the home bend, and led into the straight, closely followed by Valreina, Eaglet, Tambourine, and Duellona. Eaglet hit the front inside the distance, but My Own challenged strongly, and, staying on better, went on to win by a length and a-half. Duellona was a length back third, and Ducky Alice fourth, with Tambourine, Valreina and Biddy Comet at intervals. Brighton Hurdles A Most support was forthcoming for the bracket King’s Guard and Roman Abbey, carrying £1,976, with Prince Du £1,436 and Omeo £1,435 next in

demand. The winner, Star Comet, carried £ 365 and paid a good doublefigure return. Prince Du employed his usual tear-away tactics and after jumping the first fence was seven lengths clear of Elicit, Mangani (who fell at the second), Wiltshire and Roman Abbey. When they came round to the stands Prince Du was attended by Star Comet, Elicit, Wiltshire, Roman Abbey, Omeo, King’s Guard and Pouri, Glena Bay falling at the fence in front of the members’ stand. Prince Lu and Star Comet were out by themselves passing down the back with Elicit, Omeo and Roman Abbey following. Prince Du and Star Comet turned for home six lengths clear of the others, and the former, tiring badly, left Star Comet to go on and win by three lengths. Elicit was third two lengths behind Prince Du. Then come Omeo, Pouri, King’s Guard and Roman Abbey. Easter Handicap Pegaway was the popular selection for the most important race of the day with £2,691. Hunting Day (£2,082) was next in favour, with a drop to Silvermine (£1,027). ’J’* 10 second horse, Toxeuma, carried £787. Prince Val jumped clear at the start, but Hunting Day soon took up the running from Silvermine, Toxeuma, Mervette, Pegaway, Prince Val, Cynthia N.. Prince of Orange and Corinax. At the half-mile peg Hunting Day was still in charge from Prince Val, Silvermine, Pegaway, Cynthia N., Toxeuma, Corinax, Prince of Orange, Branson, Richfield and Dady Quex. Passing across the top Prince Wal had assumed command and had a slight advantage over Hunting Day, this pair turning into the straight with Pegaway right in behind and Corinax, Silvermine. Toxeuma, Richfield and Cynthia N. following. Once straightened up Pegaway came through and was never headed, doing it fairly comfortably all the way to the post to win by a neck from Toxeuma, who drew out to beat Silvermine by a similar distance. Hunting Day was close up fourth, followed by Prince of Orange, Gold Money, Richfield, Mervette, Prince Val, Vertigern, Cynthia N. and Corinax. Champagne Stakes Cylinder was made an odds on favourite, carrying £3,641, with Hard Words £1,751 and Jenny Diver £845 next in demand. Hard Words was smartest to begin from Green Dinnet, Jenny Diver. Tremetus, Appledore and Cylinder together. Going through the cutting I-lard Words was attended by

Wild Time, Tremetus, Jenny Diver, and Cylinder, who were bunched. Hard Words and Wild Time came round the bend together with Jenny Diver and Cylinder on terms just ahead of Arisus. The race proved easy for the favourite when they had straightened up, and he went on to win by two lengths from Jenny Diver, with Appledor e three-quarters of a length further back third. Wild Time was fourth, followed by Arisus, Hard Words, Green Linnet, Tremetus and Ruling King. Mangere Steeples Most support was accorded Airtight, with £1,785, with Boomerday, £1,629, and Wenday, £1,146 next. Wenday went out to make a fast pace at the start, but fell at the first fence. On the hill the first time. Boomerday had charge from Master Lu, Marita, Airtight and Potoanui, but when they came to the sod wall at the bottom of the hill Marita fell and Boomerday led Potoanui, with Airtight and Master Lu 10 lengths back just after jumping the stand double. On the hill the second time Boomerday fell at the first fence, leaving Airtight in charge from Potoanui find Master Lu, and that was the order in which they finished. Onslow Stakes Love Song £1,979, Biddy’s Boy £1,412 and Raffliglit £1,390 were the popular selections. Biddy’s Boy began very smartly and at the end of a furlong was leading Love Song, Waimuri, Valley, Karangapai and Green Timbef, and when they had passed the halfmile Love Song and Valley were in front followed by Karangapai, Green Timber and King March. Love Song turned for home closely attended by Valley, Green Timber, Karangapai and Lady Court, with the others also making a run. Love Song did the best in the run to the post, beating Karangapai by a length. Rafflight was a similar • distance away third. Waimuri was fourth and then came Biddy’s Boy, King March, Valley and Rosshire. Eden Handicap Don Quixote was installed favourite, carrying £2224, with Honiton £1,761, and Havaspot £1,731 next best backed. The winner, British King, carried only £393 and paid just on a score. Spring Abbey and Chromadyne went out to make the running from Carl Idem, Havaspot and Honiton. Going down the back Chromadyne and Spring Abbey were closely attended by Havaspot, Carl Idem. Currajong, Manifest, Mauriaena and Honiton. The first four ran in pairs at the half-mile with Carl Idem, Manifest, Mauriaena and Currajong following. Chromadyne and Spring Abbey still retained their place at the head of the field turning for home, but right up were Honiton, Havaspot, Carl Idem and British King. Honiton looked a winner inside the distance, but British King challenged strongly and got up to win by a head from Don Quixote, who made a fine run well from the rear. Honiton was half a head away third. Pedestal was fourth, followed by Spring Abbey, Carl Idem and Havaspot. PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP Of £500; 11 miles I—STAR STRANGER (A B.
