THREE CYCLE RECORDS

N.Z. UNION’S EASTER CARNIVAL MACKIE RIDES WELL The crowd which assembled at the Western Springs Stadium last Saturday evening, when the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Union of Cyclists held its Easter carnival, saw three new records established. Two of these were gained by Angus Mackie, while the third was annexed by Miss X. Peterson. The latter made the fast time of lmin 20sec for the women’s half-mile. This lowered her own New Zealand record by 4sec, and the Australian record by Isec. Angus Mackie lowered the two motor-paced records established by Hubert Opperman on the same track. In the mile, the old time was bettered by 1 4-ssec, while the five-mile was cut out in 6min 42 3-ssec, beating the previous time of Gmin 59sec. Both these competitors came in for hearty rounds of applause at the conclusion of their efforts. A team of four Wellington cyclists competed in the various handicaps, and also in match races, but the home riders were the victors in all the events but one, when Foote, the Wellington champion, beat the local crack, H. Dwight. Later on in the eveni?r S ,,. visht easily accounted for the vv ellmgton man. Only one spill was recorded. This was when S. Baird came down heavily in front of the judges. After a spell he was able to compete in events later in the evening. Results were as follow Pascoe Cup, two miles.—First heat: S F. ai li d ’ 1; J ' Whitten, 40yds, IsfwieU ?i nk I SP. 230yds - 3; W. Dwight, *■ H. Wade, scr.. S. Time, 4min Inr. < ’: ose , c - „ Second heat: G. P. Clark yOyds, 1; C. A. Clark, 2Soyds, 2; E. G (Wellington), 260yds, 8: G. J. JYM® ho " se - . 28 °yds, 4; r. r. Watson, s * Tirne » 4min 20sec. Final: J Mhitten, 1; J H. Wade, 2; A. W. Pinker*, o. Time, 4mm 27sec. The final saw ten good cyclists face tlie starter. A good start was effected. The limit men were putting in some fast laps making it hard for the backmarkers to make any impression. Howeyer a strong head wind down the back stretch was in favour of the solid pedaller, J. Whitten, who was gradually making up his leeway. Two laps from home lie was m a good position, and. timing his run well, he stayed on to beat the fast-finishing J. Wa'de by three-quarters of a length. Pinker was half a length away third, with the rest all bunched up. Junior Handicap, one mile.—H. V Gordon, scr., 1; L. Oxton, 60yds, 2; K. G. Hellier, 70yds, 3. The juniors could not put up fast times, thus allowing the back-riders to catch up after going about three laps. Gordon, a solid junior, used good judgment to win nicely from Oxton, who was a length in front of Hellier. Time, 2min 16 2-ssec. Match Races, Wellington v. Auckland, one lap.—L. Roberts (Auckland) beat W. Bray (Wellington); L. Aldred (Auckland) beat G. Stavely (^Wellington); N. Casey (Auckland) beat E. G. Belman (Wellington); J. Foote (Wellington) beat H. Dwight (Auckland). Women's Match Race, one lap.—Miss N. Peterson, 1; Miss Baird, 2. Time, 49 sec. Miss Peterson took the lead early, and went on to win comfortably. Half-mile Handicap.—First heat: J. J. Colman, 150yds, 1; E. Cleaver, 85yds, 2; G. J. Whitehouse, 85yds, 3. Time, 57 2-5 sec. Second heat: C. A. Clarke, 85yds, 1; G. P. Clark, 70yds, 2; L. H. Dwight, 50yds, 3. Time, 59 l-ssec. Third heat: C. Hansen, 110yds. 1; W. Dwight, 85yds. 2; K. G. Hellier, 130yds, 3. Time, 59 2-5 sec. Final: W. Dwight, 1; E. Cleaver, 2; G. J. Whitehouse, 3. The final of the half-mile saw the best finish of tho carnival. The three placed men were off the same mark, and pacing well, they turned for home locked together. W. Dwight managed to get his wheel in front as they went over the line. Whitehouse managed to hold out and gain third honours. One Mile Human-paced Race, Auckland V. Wellington.—Auckland (H. R. Dwight, L. Roberts, L. Aldred), 1; ‘Wellington (J. Foote, W. T. Bray, G. Stavely), 2. The only Wellington rider to make any impression was Foote, but when the final furlong was reached he had to give way to all of the Auckland riders. He managed to get fourth, with his co-markers hopelessly outclassed. Novelty Race.—J. Wade, 1; A. Mackie, 2; J. Foote (Wellington), 3. This event caused a lot of merriment, for all kinds of obstacles were placed on the track for riders to negotiate. Wade took the lead, and was never headed, although he was challenged early in the race by Foote, who put up the best performance, seeing he rode such a small-geared cycle. House Cup, five miles.—E. A. Cleaver, 550yds, 1; J. Whitten, 200yds, 2; W. Dwight, 550yds,. 3. This race was spoiled by the fact that the limit men were given nearly a lap start on the scratch division. The former rode with the back-markers all the way, and could not be shaken off. The event showed J. Whitten to be in his best form. Five laps from home this pedaller started out on his own to catch the front division. His effort was a brilliant one. The pace told its tale, and when the run to the judge was reached he could not down A. E. Cleaver, who won by half a length from Whitten. W. Dwight was a similar distance away third. Junior Match Race.—V. Gordon, 1; T. J. Colman, 2. V. Gordon took the lead, followed by Colman, Beart, and Robinson. In a good finish, Gordon won by a wheel. The rest of the riders were all in a bunch, close up.
