TAURANGA NOTES

The annual general meeting of the Western. Bay of Plenty Returned Soldiers’ Association was held this week at Tauranga There was a good attendance of members. The president in his report gave a resume of the year’s work and thanked all those who had helped the branch, including the Borough Council, the band, poppy sellers and many others. A delegate was appointed to attend the annual conference of Dominion Returned Soldiers’ Associations. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of £3l. The sum of £2B had been disbursed in grants and relief. The Poppy Day Fund now stood at £122 7s 3d and the Building Fund at £SB 5s 4d. The assets over liabilities were set down at £234. The election of officers resulted; President, Mr. L. R. Wilkinson; vicepresidents, Messrs. G. Cawte and A. F. Stevens; secretary, Mr. R. Barnberry. The members of the executive committee were reappointed. The annual supper is to be held next Thursday evening, when Sir Andrew H. Russell, president of the Dominion R.S.A., is to be present. Sir Andrew is to give the address at the memorial service on Anzac Day. * * * Advice has been received that a party of about 200 South Taranaki farmers will visit the Bay of Plenty at the end of May. Delegates from the Chamber of Commerce, A. and P. Association and Farmers’ Union met on Tuesday evening to arrange for the visit. The party is to be entertained at a smoke concert on the evening of their arrival and during their three days’ stay will be taken to various parts of the district and Te Puke. Fishing and harbour excursions will also be arranged and -an afternoon picnic will be held at the Mount. The estimates for the year were considered at the monthly meeting of the Hospital Board. The levy on the contributing bodies will be about the same as last year. The question as to whether the nurses’ home should be enlarged or a new building erected was deferred.
