AUCKLAND DOES WELL GOOD WINS IN TENNIS PRELIMINARIES STEDMAN PROMINENT An interested gallery followed the preliminary matches of the New Zealand University tennis tournament, begun this morning at Stanley Street. Principal interest was attached to the play of A. C. Stedman. the Auckland "University College’s foremost player, when he gained an easy win, 6—o, 6—l*, from S. Field, of Otago. Stedman’s long, hard driving had the Otago player completely puzzled, and his play confirmed the opinion that ho is likely to win the men s singles championship. Another Aucklander, C. G. Bowden, had a more difficult match in winning from E. Christie, of Otago. One of the finest games was when Nliss E. Roberton, of Auckland, was run to three sets in the women’s singles by Miss M. Bine, of Yictoria University College, Wellington. Nliss Roberton took the first set, 6—4. only after persistency in well-sustained rallies. The Wellington girl sent shots in adroit fashion all over the court, to win the next set, 5—6. but in the deciding set Miss Roberton’s experience and steadiness defeated her opponent simply enough, 6 —3. Miss Roberton’s low driving was exceptionally well judged. Another Auckland win came when Nliss Ruth Taylor beat Miss M. Carty, Victoria, through sheer application. Bast year’s winners of the men’s doubles, A. C. Stedman and J. E. Stedman, emerged easily from their first test, with the Otago pair, Small and Clark. Each college lias what amount to the first and second strings in the sections, and the success of the strings representing Auckland, which holds the challenge cup, in the men’s and the women’s singles, indicates a superior average standard of play.
