Fierce Broadsides

FINAL CINDER TRACK MEET

Western Springs Closes

RACING motor-cycles roared track at Western Springs fierce broadsides. Thrilling spe and time again in close finishes feet in excitement, while from round of applause for the succ popularity or grading. It wa racing, not marred by spills < Thus ended Auckland’s f burst of enthusiasm which aug cess when the track is opened Honours were even in the series of . match races run off between the Wellington team and the four Auckland I riders selected to represent Western j Springs Stadium in the first inter- j provincial challenge series of the Dominion. Ben Bray was successful against Billy Harvie, and Bert Coyle also defeated his opponent, Clarrie Tonks. The Auckland and Dominion champion, Alf Mattson, however, went down in both the match race and in the final of the Auckland Speedway Championship, to the fastest rider of Kilbirnie Stadium, Wally Kilmister. Jack Garmson was also defeated in his event with “Lofty” Naylor. Outstanding in an evening of thrills was the fearless —at times reckless — riding of Kilmister. With his machine lying over at almost impossible angles lie slid round the corners in a manner which showed his mastery of the art. His broadsides were too great at times, however, and frequently lost him much of the advantage gained by his superior speed in the straights. In : the match against Alf Mattson, Kilmister covered the mile in lm 255, the fastest time ever recorded in a match event on the Western Springs track. The B graders, too, were in good form for the closing events of the season, Tom Butler again proving victorious. He had recovered from his indisposition of last Saturday and sat his machine like an old hand. He secured enough points to give him the Hudson-Essex Cup, although the issue was in doubt right up to the end of the final event, one point only separating the winner from Jack Jordon. Butler also received the Norton Cup, won by him on Saturday. Probably the most popular rider of the evening was Ben Bray who, although not exceptionally fast, lapping in just under the 22sec mark, rode most consistently.
