Final Try-Outs Bring Hunting Day into Limelight

Many Good Gallops Witnessed Today

The final gallops for the Auckand Racing Club's autumn meeting were staged at Ellerslie this morning, the course proper, with the pegs out about 4b feet, being very fas", light rain during the night having had little effect on the going. A fog came over the course before breakfast and for a few minutes sectional timing was made impossible. During the breakfast interval a steady drizzle set in and continued for the best part of an hour. The honours of the morning were taken by the Easter Handicap favourite, Hunting Day, who gelloped six furlongs in a couple of seconds better time than anything else. It was a really brilliant workout. Others to make friends through excellent trials were Ceremony,

pleased better than her companion, and it looks as if shf* is going to bother Cylinder and Hard Words iu Saturday's Champagne Stakes. Appledore is reported to be a doubtful starter in this classic. Cynthia X. cleared away from Paitonu in the last furlong of a mile, run in the splendid time of 1.45 1-5. The former displayed rare dash and she should not go through the Auckland and Avondale fixtures without scoring a win. She is a distinct light-weight possibility in the Easter Handicap. After Breakfast While it was drizzling the Easter Handicap favourite, Hunting JJay, with his pilot, 11. Wiggins, in the saddle, made a great impression when ho ran out a strong six furlongs. He took 13 for the first furlong, and then got to the end of the second in 25 2-5, the three in a lively 37, and was apparently going easily to return 1.17 for the journey. lie rattled off his final half-mile in 51 3-5, and the last five in 1.4 1-5, which shows that for the five* his time was bettered twice only during the morning. Hunting Bay entered into his tasK with great zest and seemed as if he could have done much better. This perhaps was more apparent than real, for the time on a track that must hay* been a wee bit dead after the lain was phenomenal. There is little doubt that the chestnut is a very fit horse, and as there is little reason to doub: his fitness to see out a mile he should retain his position of favourite up to starting time. Good Wind-up The Oaks candidate, My Own, was not given a very strenuous task. Sho was sent once round, going threequarter pace only, and then sprinting home from the three-furlong peg. This task was accomplished in 37, which was a smart performance and indicates that the Hastings filly may play an important part in the decision of the ladies’ classic on Satui day. Love Song conceded Jenny Diver a start and was just behind her at the post, the pair running their five furlongs in 1.3 4-5, which was the best time, bar Ceremony’s, recorded over this distance. Both youngsters are well, the former being a particularly impressive customer. Cylinder, who is sure to retain his position as favourite for the Champagne Stakes, was paired with Arisus over six furlongs, but those who expected something above the ordinary in the way of time making wore disappointed, for it was only a nice workout, time apparently being a secondary consideration. They ran the first three* furlongs well in 38 4-5, and completed their task in 1.20 2-j. Cylinder performed very evenly. Arisus will take time, but he may b* a good horse later on. The hurdlers. Mangani and Omeo, went once round in 2.15 1-5, the last half-mile taking 56 4-5, and they were followed immediately afterward by two other jumpers in Kauri Park an«i Marita, their figures for the same ground being 2.18 2-5 and 58 respectively. Omeo looks a picture of fitness. Toxeuma Pieases Three Easter Handicap candidates in Toxeuma, Koyal Parade and White Fang jumped off from the seven-fuf* long peg, the first-mentioned leading practically all the way. Koyal Parade came at him over the last bit, bein? hunted along, and there was little between them at the post, White not being ridden out. It was a sterling effort on the part of both Toxeuma and Koyal Parade, for their time Was a ticK better than Silvermine’s. The firsfurlong took 12 2-5, two furlongs 2-5, three furlongs 3S 2-5, and the £aUmile 50 4-5 (indicating that the pac was right on) and they finished trip in 1.30 4-5. t One of the best rounds seen Ellerslie for some time was reg sterea by that good horse. Star Stranger, ridden by H. Wiggins. He was we. picked up at the seven furlongs by St. Leger candidate, Bon Quixote ***• Gray). The former hit out very i re€ * all the way, and at the end the pa-* finished together, with Star Strang pulling hard. The full round took and the last seven furlongs 1-31 <wn . shows Bon Quixote in a favouraoilight) and the final half-mile ol ' It was a remarkable performance Star Stranger’s part and indicates t - he is going to take some beating m engagements her© . _ r Lady Quex was assisted by f stable-mate, Hipo, in disposing* seven furlongs in 1.33 1-5. The for® % went out to lead throughout in easy fashion, carving out the lasv furlongs in 1.21. Silvermine. Richfield, Cynthia N., Star Stranger and Don Quixote. The Easter Handicap candidate Eager Hose was much too good for Kavvainga, the pair giving a smooth performance in running six furlongs in 1.19 4-5, after the first three had been left behind in 38 Eager Hose has come through a good preparation splendidly. Ceremony, with 11. Wiggins up, was easily the star performer before breakfast. He was sent five furlongs by himself, to run the first two in 24 3-5 and come home over the final three in 39, making the smart time of 1.3 3-5 for the five furlongs. It was a brilliant effort, for the son of Absurd was not going at top at any part of the trip. Ceremony has always been regarded as a speed merchant, and his great pace was amply demonstrated this morning. In Sydney in the spring Ceremony won a seven-furlong race in 1.24, scoring. easily. He had to be given a letup subsequently, and after his spell lie was produced at Awapuni three weeks ago, finishing fourth in the big sprint, although he did not shape so well in the Manawatu Stakes the following day. Those two races wrought a wonderful improvement in Ceremony, and although it is generally considered that the mile on Saturday niny bother him, he will go really well. Probably the open six furlongs on Monday will suit him much better. King Emerald and Huling King were not all out to run five furlongs in 1.7, and Footrule easily accounted for Great Emblem over half a mile in 52. Vertigern was not unduly bustled to leave seven furlongs behind in 1.3 G. He looks very bright. Duellona and Count Palatine both moved well in a spin from the new mile barrier, taking 1.45 4-5, and they pleased by the manner in which they pulled up. A Slick Seven Silvermine had a distinct pull in the weights when sent out to run seven furlongs with Bright Glow, the latter having the inside running. There was no loitering at any part of the trip, the first furlong being reeled off in 12, the two in 24 3-5, and the first three in 37 1-5. From this point they came home full of running to record 1.31, the final half-mile occupying o 3 4-5. Silvermine appeared to be going much better than his companion and with prospects of rain by Saturday his chance reads good. They covered a bit more ground than other horses that galloped. Pedestal and Hannibal carved out seven furlongs in 1.32 3-5, the former doing it the better and being fairlv first half -mile was left behind in 1.31. It was a good effort tor novices. Gold Money showed all her speed in getting to the end of four furlongs in i,, 4 ' 5 ' t l he should so a good mile, although her efforts over the last 1’ months have been confined to six furlong events. Richfield pleased when he galloped six furlongs with the two-year-old in 1.19, the last five takGrand Timber appeared to be going alnnrt t '«er. G f' a '! d - Spirit at the end of a- sohd five furlongs, run in 1 4 4-5 the first two taking 25.
