ART WAS AUTOMATIC

ATKINSON NOT SANE SAYS CORONER N.Z. ARTIST’S DEATH Reed. 10.45 a.m. LONDON, Tuesday. Giving a verdict of suicide, the coroner said it was clear that W. H. Atkinson, the New Zealand artist, who was found gassed at Marylebone, was not quite sane. The artist employing Atkinson said in evidence his drawing was automatic. When he tried to draw by conscious effort he made a hopeless mess. He had lately been turning out weird landscapes, suggesting a prehistoric country.

He was depressed by his failure to sell his drawings.
