GIVEN A CHANCE
TWO VAGRANTS ARRESTED AT SILVERDALE / ONE GOES TO DUNEDIN Having been a week in gaol on remand, two vagrants were convicted by Mr. F, Iv. Hunt, S.M., at the Police Court this morning, and ordered to come up for sentence if called upon within six months. “That week in gaol did them both good,” remarked the magistrate. Richard Ruddei* Pledger, a gardener, aged 36, and William Adamson, a labourer, aged 33, were arrested at Silverdale where they had been sleeping out and drinking methylated spirits. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said this morning that Pledger had been committed to Roto Roa Island for a year in August of 1925. He had also been fined £2 for using indecent language. According to Staff-Captain Holmes of the Salvation Army, Pledger had been given a ticket to return to Dunedin when he left Roto Roa, but he had not used it. “If you are in town after the express goes this evening, you will be given three months,” remarked the magistrate to accused. Jt was stated that nothing was known against Adamson but he was worthy of a chance. Both men were convicted and ordered to come up for sentence within eix months if called upon.
