"VAST IMPERTINENCE”
IRATE SETTLER’S LETTER REFUSAL TO PAY RATES From Our Own Correspondent TAUMARUNUI, Monday. The Ohura County Council at its monthly meeting considered a letter from a settler, W. Fleming, of Matiere, and it was finally resolved to “receive” the document. The letter was quite frankly worded, and “absolutely demanded” that the council order another settler named .O’Donnell to remove certain buildings and fences from the vicinity of complainant’s property. Though the council had formerly given O’Donnell permission to put up the buildings, the letter described his action as “vast impertinence” and the “greatest piece of injustice I have ever had to deal with.” The writer invited certain councillors to place themselves in his position, and continued: “I will not pay any further rates until the justice to me has been accomplished, and I receive a letter from you stating that you will proceed with the moving of all inconveniences placed on my side of the road.” The council resolved to notify Mr. Fleming that it had given Mr. O’Donuell permission to erect the buildings and that he should apply to the Commissioner of Crown Lands in regard to the fencing to which he objected.
