Good Dividends
WINNERS AT TE RAPA Vali Scores Comfortably AS in the Wanganui Cup a few weeks ago, Corinax and In the Shade were the principals in the finish of the Storey Memorial Cup, the former avenging his defeat at the River City by a short margin.
The weather was fine for the opening of the Waikato Racing Club’s autumn meeting at Te Rapa on Saturday, but a cold south-westerly wind made matters fairly unpleasant for the large number of spectators present, j The track was in splendid order, mid- J week rain having taken the sting out j of the ground. The racing was all that could be desired, and although in several cases easy wins were recorded, there was one or two spirited finishes. The race for the Storey Memorial Cup was a pleasing affair, and a furlong from the judge several were disputing the finish, only to give way to Corinax, who came with a wet sail on the outside to account for In the Shade and the improver, Prince of Orange. After the? race the trophies were presented. Mr. J A. Young, M.P.. calling upon Mrs. G. W. Vercoe, the wife of the president, to present the Gold Cup to Mr. J. Williamson. Mr. Young presented the pair of field-glasses to All*. Wiliamson, who is also the trainer of Corinax, and the gold-mounted whip to the rider, R. McTavish. Nearly Took the Double J. T. Jamieson had to be content with second placing in the big event, but bis Great Northern St. Leger candidate, Vali, gave nothing a chance in the last 100 yards of the President’s Handicap, beating Lady Quex and Gold Money fairly easily. The dividend, perhaps, was the surprising part of it all, for few horses from the Takanini region return double figures. A mild surprise was registered in the two-year-old race, the Juvenile Handicap, King Ford and Karangapai, first and second respectively, paying double figures. A decrease of £794 was shown on i the totalisator, the figures for the day amounting to £30,740, as agains* £31,534 on the corresponding day last year. Mr. E. IT. O’Meara discharged his secretarial duties to the satisfaction of all, and he was always ready to assist in arrangements for the benefit of patrons. Notes on the racing follow:- • Maiden Stakes Betting in the opening race on the programme, the Maiden Stakes, covered a wide range, but the actual favourite was the Royal Visitor—Trig bracket, £421, with also solid support for Biddy Comet, £365, and the Royal Finance—Miss Albyn bracket, £233. First Division Valorient and Kingsland were slow away after causing delay at the post, and the early leaders were Etehi Rangi, Royal Finance, Trig, Caulis and Day Guide, but at the end of three furlongs the last-named had run to the front and was piloting Etehi Rangi. Trig, Caulis and Peruse. There was no change in the leading pair as the field came round the bend. but Royal Finance was right in behind, followed by Caulis. Once under pressure Royal Finance came through in fine style, and had no difficulty in winning by two and a-half lengths from Peruse, with Etehi Rangi a neck away third. Fourth was Day Guide, and then came Waiau Lady, Caulis, Sweet Whisper and Stonehenge. Second Division The race proved a procession, Biddy Comet leading out from Sweet Whisper, and Guid Day and at the turn the first two were three lengths clear of Guid Day, Sister White, Land Measure and Silver Division. Nothing had a chance with Biddy Comet in the run home, and she beat Sister White in effortless style by a length and a half, Sweet Whisper being cut out of second by a neck. Land Measure, Guid Day, Momonatui and Silver Division were next. Frankton Hurdles Kawini was made a firm favourite, carrying £5Ol, with a drop to Mangam, £ 3GO. The winner, Glenstar, carried £276. As they jumped the first hurdle Temperature had charge from Glenstar and Grand Arch, and leading into the straight Temperature and Grand Arch were together in front of Glenstar, The Lamb and Master Roley. Going down the back Grand Arch had taken charge from Temperature, Glenstar, Glena Bay and Master Roley, and this was the order into the straight, Glenstar took charge at the last fence and went on to win very easily from Grand Arch, with Glena Bay third.
Temperature was fourth, and then came Master Roley, Kawini and Mangani. Juvenile Handicap Biddy's Boy was the popular selection with £572, with the bracket Tremetus and Rafflight, £491 next in demand. The winner. King Ford, carried only £ISO and paid a double figure return. Rafflight led out from Rosebank, Tremetus and Biddy’s Boy. The last named took charge at the halfmile from Rafflight, King Ford, Imarnint and Karangapai. Coming round the turn Biddy’s Boy was still in charge from King Ford, Rafflight, Hampton Park and Imamint. In a good race home King Ford got in_ front in the last 100 yards to beat Karangapai by half a length, with Wild Time a neck away third. Linley Hack Handicap This was a good betting race between Te Hoia and Fage Boy carrying £1617 and £1,504 respectively with Red Day third choice carrying £561. Red Day was the early leader from Rose Willnnyx, Spring Abbey. Page Boy, Te Hoia, Day Lass, Haviland, Motere and Count Palatine. At the end of half j a mile Page Bov was in close attendance on Red Day, followed by Rose Willonyx and Haviland. Red Day and Page Boy turned into the straight practically abreast with Spring Abbey and Haviland right up following. Page Boy was always in a winning position in the run home, but had to be kept going to beat Te Hoia by a neck, with Motere a length away third. Then came Spring Abbey, Red Day, Count Palatine and Rose Willonyx. PuketaHa High-Weight Pompeius was an even money chance carrying £1,269 with a big drop to the second favourite, Standfast and Owairaka carrying £452 and £376 respectively. King Willonyx was badly left at the start, and Le Choucas was hung up in the tapes, Tinokoa leading out from Value, Owairaka, and Standfast. Owairaka had charge at the end of three furlongs from Tinokoa, Quinsilia., Luminary and tSandfast, Owairaka still had a slight advantage over Quinsilia, Luminary and Standfast into the straight, with Pompeius closing up. Pompeius finished very strongly and over the last 100 yards won comfortably from Standfast, with Value third. Lunette was fourth, followed by Quinsilia and King Willonyx. President’s Handicap In a good betting race, Prince Val was made favourite with £639, with Valuation £631 and Gold Money £531 next in demand. The winner Vali, carried £266 and returned a double figure dividend. Awarere was the smartest to begin and soon led out from Vali, Taku Tama, Valuation, Leitrim, Lady Quex and Kingfi%ld. Awarere still had charge at the home turn from Vali, Taku Tama, Valuation, Leitrim, Kingfield and Lady Quex. When they straightened up Vali went on to win comfortably from Lady Quex with Gold Money third. Prince Val was fourth, followed by Te Atiawa, Anvarere, Leitrim, Lady’s Boy and Royal Doulton. Berescourt Hack Handicap Backers went for a recovery in the final race, and the favourite division was Ruling Chief £7OO, Valreina £594, and Volimond £516. Carl Idem and Avon Court began smartest and at the end of a furlong they were attended by Vital, Te Waitai and Volimond, but a change in the order was effected crossing the top, Vital taking charge to lead Valreina, Te Waitai, Carl Idem, Ruling Chief (who was going up fast on the outer) and Avon Court. Ruling Chief was in close attendance on the leaders turning into the home stretch, but he made no impression in the run to the judge, it being left to On Top to flash up on the outside with a startling burst to beat Volimond by a necK. Snow Prince was two lengths ba<&£3 third, and he was followed past tag post by Valreina, Gay Cockade, Waitai, Avon Court and Fcrennis. Results were:

NOTES FROM OPOTIKI NANCY LEE RECOMMISSIONED Special to THE SUN OPOTIKI. Today. Nancy Lee, who had a prolonged spell from racing, is again in work, and is coming along nicely in her preparation, and it should not be long before she is again called upon to carry colours. Lady Castlemaine has been returned to her owner-breeder. This mare developed peculiar lumps on her flanks, and it has been decided not to race her again. In all probability she will be relegated to the stud next season. Golden Pennant, the winner of the Waioeka Stakes at the recent Opotiki meeting, has suffering with his teeth. He has been receiving attention and an improvement in mastication is already apparent. This chestnut gelded son of Autumn—Flagship will be heard of again In the near future.
IN A HAIRDRESSER’S CHAIR
An elderly man visited a hairdressing saloon in Dunedin the other day to have a hair-cut. He interrupted the barber several times by sneezing and exhibiting all the symptoms of a bad cold. “Look here, old man,” said the barber, “this is the thing to take.” Whereupon he produced a bottle of Baxter’s Lung Preserver. “The weather has been so changeable lately that 1 got a bad cold myself, but after three doses I was fixed up. On your way home you had better go into a chemist’s and get a bottle yourself.” The sufferer followed this sound advice and speedily broke up his cold.
Baxter’s Lung Preserver has been the favourite family cough and cold remedy in New* Zealand for over sixty years. It eases sore throats "-and relieves bronchial trouble in a marvellous manner. This rich, red, soothing compound allays the irritation and breaks up the most stubborn cough. “Baxter’s” also possesses unique tonic properties that help to build up the system.
You can get a generous sized bottle from any chemist or store for 2s 6d, while the economical family size is 4s 6d. For the convenience of travellers there is a handy pocket size at eighteenpcnce. Be sure you get “Baxter’s”!—s.
