DEVIATION WANTED
HIKURANGI LEVEL CROSSING DANGERS DISCUSSED Special to THE SUN WHANGAREI, Thursday. The recent fatalities at the level crossing at Hikurangi were discussed at the meeting of the Whangarei Chamber of Commerce last evening. It was decided to ask for a road deviation. The president, Mr. J. H. Walker, considered that the chamber’s support should be given in any effort for lessening the risk of another accident such as the recent one. Mr. C. V. Stringer suggested that the question of a deviation should be taken up with the Whangarei County Council, the Main Highways Board and Auckland Automobile Association. He moved to this effect. Mr. J. E. Holmes considered that the present was the time to press the matter. The movement, as urged by the various local bodies in the past, had been more than justified, but the Highways Board had thrown cold water upon the idea, saying that the crossing was not as dangerous as many others. However, it had been proved that in bad weather at any rate it was dangerous. Mr. G. A. Storrar said that the elimination of railway crossings was a great problem, and in this case it was more a question of road deviation than one for the Railway Department. He thought the crossing under consideration was the least dangerous between Whangarei and Hikurangi. The motion was carried.
