TRAFFIC CONTROL

CHILDREN AS INSPECTORS EDUCATION DEPARTMENT'S IDEA To minimise the danger o£ motor traffic to school children, Councillor C. R. Petrie, who is chairman of the Otahuhu School Committee, said at last evening’s meeting of the Otathuhu Borough Council that the Education Department had recommended that the traffic inspector of the Otahuhu Borough Council be asked to instruct the senior boys of the school in traffic control, and that some of these hoys be selected to control motor traffic in the vicinity of the schools when the children are being dismissed. He expressed the opinion that the idea was a good one, and would help to safeguard the children on the highways. Councillor G. V. Pearce said the proposal opened up a big question, for boys of 12 to be appointed to stand on the Great South Road, stopping motor traffic. He asked if it was considered possible for school children to control traffic. How many stops would a motorist have to make between Auckland and Papakura if schoolboys were able to stop all traffic? Councillor Petrie said the lives of children were more valuable than time, and the suggestion should not he treated lightly. Councillor Grey expressed the opinion that it would be more to the point if a teacher were appointed, but he did not favour children undertaking the work. On the recommendation of the Mayor, Councillor Petrie agreed to instruct the headmaster of the school to forward an application to the council for the services of the inspector to instruct the children in traffic control.
