FLAX-CUTTERS’ PAY

OPPOSITION TO SETTLEMENT Press Associalon PALMERSTON N., Wednesday. In the face of strong opposition by the millers, the Arbitration Court today settled the long-standing dispute as to the rate of payment for* two new methods of flax-cutting. It fixed the rate at 15s a ton for leaf cut by the A shape method, and 13s 2d a ton for leaf cut by the cone method. The rate of pay was based on a test carried out at the' suggestion of the court on lines mutually agreed upon. The millers’ representative asserted that the industry could not stand this rate, but the court pointed out that the present award had expired, and if the rate was found excessive the parties could get together and endeavour to arrive at a more satisfactory rate.
