WINDING-UP AFFAIRS

ONE TREE HILL BOARD MEETS FINANCES FOR YEAR Approaching the end of its existence as a district board, the One Tree Hill Road Board devoted its meeting last evening to winding up the year’s finances and arranging affairs in preparation for the district’s coming change of status. From May 14 onward board will meet as a Borough * Council, an ' election being held on that date. The reports of the board’s various officials were presented. The traffic inspector disclosed an increase in drivers’ licences of 59 over the previous year, when licences totalled 655. Considerable work done in the improvement of the roads of the district was reported by the foreman, while the building inspector reported the i issue of 44 building permits, of a total value of £9,991 3s, since the beginning of the year. In the general account a net credit balance of £Bl4 had been achieved This, the report stated, was due to an increase of revenue over estimates and to savings in expenditure effected by lower prices for materials and not . bv curtailment of any work. No less than 9? 12 per cent, of the i year’s total of rates had come in by * March 31. Further improvement was f shown in the waterworks account, ■sales of water totalling £5,320, against £4,849 for the preceding year. * While discussing a disputed tramstop it was decided to send a letter .of sympathy to Mr. R. G. Clark, a member of the board, who was to have prepared a report on this subject. Mr. Clark is suffering from ill-health. Most of the other questions that arose had to be deferred until the first meeting of the council, and the evening concluded with a motion congratulating the clerk, Mr. A. Leese, on the statement of accounts. Mr. I. J. Gold- . stine, who proposed the motion, said he would always prefer to see the disj trict with a. small credit balance and a * big record of work done. The general meeting of ratepayers will be held on May 13, the day before the election.
