LAWYERS TO CONFER

PROGRAMME FOR EASTER TALK BY CHIEF JUSTICE Addresses and discussions on many points of interest to the legal profession will constitute the programme of the third annual conference of the New Zealand Law Society, which will be held in Auckland on April 22, 23 and 24. The first address will be given by the Chief Justice, Sir Michael Myers, K.C.M.G. The Mayor, Mr. George Baildon, and Mr. Alexander Gray, president of the society, will welcome delegates at the University College. Papers will be delivered on “Circumstantial Evidence” by Mr. Harold F. Johnston; “Appeal to the Privy Council,” Mr. J. B. Callun; “Nisi Prius.” Mr. Claude H. Weston; and “The Position of Mortgagees with Respect to Fire Insurance,” by Professor R. M. Algie. Many remits from the various branches will also be discussed, including suggestions for the improvement of the Workers’ Compensation Act, 1922. Another proposal is that the statements of witnesses interviewed by the police in connection with motor accident cases be available to the parties concerned or their counsel in any proceedings or inquiries. The need for bringing the laws relating to collisions on the land into line with those of the sea,, in which all parties guilty of negligence* are apportioned their share ot' the damage, will be stressed. Another suggestion is legislation abolishing the liability of a husband for his wife’s torts. A remit concerning the amending Oi. the Magistrate’s Courts’ Act, 1928, in providing for appeals, will also be considered. On the social side of the conference the committee has arranged a reception by the president, Mr. R. P. Towle, and Mrs. Towle, a harbour excursion, golf and tennis, an afternoon motor drive and a theatre party. There will he sports competitions among the men for a silver cup donated by the “New Zealand Law' Journal.”
