Speed-Cycling on Road and Track

By “

“CYCLOS.”

THE AMATEURS A carnival was staged last Saturday afternoon at Papatoetoe, when a number of riders from the Manukau Club competed. This was the first occasion on which cyclists have been catered for at an amateur athjetic meeting since the recent breakaway. The officials were well repaid both in the standard of cycling produced and by the large crowd which rolled up to witness the sports. * * * A first in the mile and a second in the half-mile was L. Roberts’s share of the trophies. Laurie is a greatlyimproved cyclist. His starts at the stadium have given him a bit of polish. He has also learned the knack of judging a race. This was demonstrated when he annexed the mile event. He had to show the best of ability to down that good pedaller, J. Whitten. A Splendid Performance Frank Casey showed up well in the two-mile race. This handicap suited him, as it took a real hard ride. Xo doubt he was fortunate that a portion of the field were involved in a mix-up on the seventh lap. Still, Casey's : effort was a good one. It would have taken a very fit rider to have headed him off. Two spills occurred during the day. They were the outcome of some of the competitors trying to get through on the inside of the track. It was regrettable that the track stewards did not hold an inquiry into the cause of tlfe accident. The Manukau Club took a stand when they disqualified a member for looking round at a recent carnival, and it is for the safety of riders themselves that these breaches should not go unnoticed. * * * A meeting will be held at Western Springs Stadium on Easter Saturday night. This will be the second carnival held by the Auckland Centre of the X.Z.U.C. The newly-appointed secretary, Mr. Jack Auckram. will be in charge of affairs. All entries may be forwarded to him at 284 Queen Street. A special attraction will bi the appearance of three Wellington cyclists

THE CASH RIDERS

Cash cyclists will be in evidence round the country districts during the Easter period. With meetings ai Whakatane, Rotorua, Te Aroha and Otorohangu, there is plenty of races for the local riders, who intend to travel. * * * S. Hayes, J. McDonald, and F. Lowndes will be on hand at Rotorua, while W. Pratney and W. Francis intend visiting Te Aroha. * * To Reappear on the Road After an absence of some time from track racing J. Lindop will make a reappearance on the road during the coming season. Jim’s last outing was at the Opperman carnival, where he rode well, but his condition did not allow of his best. Twice Auckland road champion, Lindop will find his task a lot harder this year, as a number of improving riders will endeavour to wrest this coveted honour from him. Still, it is going to take a speedy and heady pedaller to take away his laurels. * * * A good middle-distance rider, A. Ritchie, will be the most notable newcomer in the new season. He has a good record behind him, and a reproduction of his form should give the | Saturday afternoon fans ample rej ward for their trip out to the tarsealed circuit. Ritchie is a scratch Southern rider, having had match races with the best wheelmen in New Zealand. * * * North Auckland Classic On Saturday the Dargaville to Whangarei and back road race will be held. This event carries a purse of £25, beside the title of Xorth Auckland champion. Only a couple of Auckland riders intend competing, but the odds will be against them, for a road race of this description takes a good deal of preliminary road work, which has not been available to the local riders. * # * Followers of the sport will regret to hear that '"Booker” Herring, the popular supporter of the club, and an oldtime cyclist, is to re-enter the hospital. After he has recovered from the effects of his illness Mr. Herring intends visiting Australia. He stated that he ■ would, in all probability, not return :to New Zealand for some time. All [•will wish him a speedy recovery, and i an enjoyable stay in Australia. His | work as a committeeman will be sadly [ missed.
