COOLED OFF
PRINCIPAL’S FIRST WIN The failure of Principal to get in the money the first day at Whangarei was a facer to students of form, but this was perhaps accounted for by the track being a bit soft and the distance, five furlongs, being too short. They say that money talks—it says “good-bye” mostly—and this was so over the six furlongs in the maiden class on the second day with Principal. Right up to within a minute or two of the closing of the totalisator, Biddy Comet (who had run two seconds the first day) was hot, at less than thirty shillings, but then there was a rush for Principal, and he wound up at under evens. And this move anticipated the finish, for Principal and Biddy Comet ran one-two. Prior to the race Principal was in a lather of perspiration, but when walking round at the barrier he cooled off a lot. His win was a good one, but he had to be ridden hard over the last bit, for he wanted to stop. This win renders Principal ineligible for the Maiden Handicap at Te Rapa next Saturday.
