OBSTETRICS APPEAL
TRAINING OF DOCTORS ADDRESS BY MR. MACKENZIE There was a large audience at the Majestic Theatre on Sunday, when a further appeal on behalf of the fund to endow a chair of obstetrics at the University of Otago was made by Mr. Kenneth Mackenzie, in an address delivered under the auspices of the Xew Zealand Association for the Advancement of Rationalism. According to Mr. Mackenzie, the death-rate in motherhood throughout the world was about 5 a 1,000, and the average in this country was close to that rate. Many cases led to subsequent illnesses and sometimes permanent disability. Such facts demonstrated the urgent need for more attention in the study of obstetrics. In the past this study had been hampered at the medical school by lack of funds. By creating an endowment that would provide an income of £2,000 a year it was hoped to secure the appointment of a highly qualified man at the university. His services would also be available in an advisory capacity to th« State and to the medical fraternity. He would strive to provide the younger medical men with a wider knowledge than was now given of this most important branch of medical science. At the conclusion of the address the chairman announced that the association for the Advancement of Rationalism had made a donation of £5 5s to th© fund.
