WOOL IMPROVES
RATES ADVANCE AT LAST DUNEDIN SALE VERY LITTLE PASSING Press Association DUNEDIN, Monday. The fourth and final DLinedin wool sale of the season was held today, when a total of S,S4B bales was offered to a large and representative bench of buyers. The offering comprised a good number of well-known clips, which, owing to* the previous sale being restricted, were held over for this fixture. Taken generally the quality of the wools was above the usual standard which is generally offered at the April sale. e As the latest reports from London indicated a rise in values of 5 per cent, on crossbreds, it was anticipated that the prices here would respond. This anticipation was fully borne out. and at today's auction prices appreciated generally for all classes of wool from ? ( d to a lb. with the exception of inferior and shabby halfbreds, which were unchanged. Competition was widely spread, and Bradford and the Continent competed spiritedly for all fleece wools. Local mills were keen competitors for all good lines of combing wools suitable for their requirements. The Continental buyers were anxious to secure lines of bellies and pieces, and.the great bulk of these fell to their bids. Although the prices were not up to a payable level to the grower, it was evident that buyers were operating at an increased limit and this was appreciated by growers, who practically all met the market. It was estimated that 98 per* cent, of the offering was sold under the hammer. The range of prices is as follows, prices g.t the sale in March being given for the purpose of comparison:
HAWKE’S BAY FRUIT RECORD EXPORT EXPECTED Press Association „ NAPIER, Monday. It is expected that exports of apples and pears from Hawke’s Bay this season will reach a record quantity, and that the total number of cases will be about 250,000 or more. The previous largest number of cases exported was 195,360, in 1928. Last year’s output, which was adversely affected by hailstorms, was about 146,000. Although the export season has still rather more than a month to go, a total of 138,000 cases had been railed to Wellington for export up to Saturday, There is to be a shipment of 1,500 cases of fruit direct from Napier to Rotterdam by the Middlesex, which sails tomorrow. The unusual course of loading fruit at Napier is being taken only because the Middlesex has space which would not otherwise be used. An odd direct shipment was made for a similar reason last year. The use of the Middlesex. is in no way an indication of any change of policy on the part of local fruitgrowers. Indeed, the Fruitgrowers’ Federation is opposed to shipping direct so long as the shipping facilities in Napier remain in their present undeveloped state. Risks of | delay, deterioration and mishandling | are stated to be too great so long as \ lightering has to be employed in load- „ ing fruit direct. More shipments would r be made, however, if the fruit could be [ run up to the ship’s side.
