SHOOTING FATALITY
MAORI BOY FOUND DEAD COUSIN’S SAD DISCOVERY From Our Own Correspondent HAMILTON, Today. A shocking fatality occurred at Taharoa settlement, 17 miles from Raglan, during the week-end, the victim being Joe Rota, a Maori boy, aged 12. Rota, who lives with his uncle, Dave Enoka, and his cousin, a little girl, Is said to have entered the whare about 2.30 on Saturday and locked himself in. Enoka went away in the morning and did not return till after the tragedy. A few minutes after the boy entered the whare the little girl heard a shot and forcing an entrance found her cousin dead, with a doublebarrelled shot-gun near him. The police hold the view that Rota was playing with the gun on the bed when it accidentally discharged, the charge penettrating his left breast to the heart. Help was sent for, and a doctor and the police arrived in the evening. An inquest was opened at Raglan yesterday before Mr. T. Parker, J.P., and a jury of four. After evidence of identification had been given the inquest was adjourned sine die.
