CATHOLIC CHURCHES

BISHOP LISTON PAYS VISIT WELCOME AT NORTHCOTE Bishop Liston made his first episcopal visit to the Northcote Roman Catholic Church on Sunday. On behalf of the parishioners, an address of welcome was read by Mr. D. P. O'Leary. The parishioners of Northcote and Birkenhead, he stated, expressed their appreciation of his kindness in visiting the parish, and extended to him a sincere and cordial welcome. His presence afforded them the occasion to offer their respectful congratula, tions on his succession to the bishopric of the diocese, and their prayer was that the blessings of Providence would rest upon his labours in the responsible duties of his high office. The area of the Northcote - Birkenhead parish had a large population, and the wish was expressed that, with Bishop Liston’s kindly and fatherly interest, the church facilities for the parishioners and their children would progress under his jurisdiction. The first step in this direction had been taken when his Lordship appointed the Rev. Dean Brennan to be in charge of the parish. The parishioners were convinced that from the fervour, enthusiasm, and energy displayed by him, that the future of the parish would be a bright one. “In greeting your Lordship as our bishop, we wish to assure you of our deep respect for your high office, and our sincere regard and affection for yourself personally,” the address concluded. Bishop Liston, in reply, returned thanks for the greeting, and the sentiments expressed. These, he was specially pleased, to observe, were of a truly religious nature. He asked that his hearers’ fervent prayers be offered for their parish priest and also for himself that both might successfully bear their responsibilities. If the parishioners co-operated with their priest in the work of the parish, they could be assured that progress -would be made. At a not far distant date they should be in possesion of a presbytery and a school, so that residents would be able to enjoy more fully the services of the church. Bishop Liston also visited the parish of Takapuna.
