WHY HARRY ROUSED

TRAINER GETS RUN ON THE INNER CLUB MAKING INQUIRIES Harry Rouse, the able and energetic caretaker of the Waikato Trotting Club’s course at Claudelands is well known to the great j majority of the “boys” as a court- j eous and obliging servant of the club. Early or late, it makes no difference to the genial caretaker, what time visiting owners and trainers arrive, he is there to admit them. Harry has insructions from the club about when and where horses can be exercised and these naturally it is liis duty to enforce. But he is not hard on the boys, and will meet them wherever possible. However, one visiting horseman put one well over Henry of Claudelands tho other day. When all was quiet the cute one slipped a work-out on the inner of the main track—which was against the rules and regulations. It caused a big dust up, but the caretaker, with Sherlock Holmes foresight, landed the culprit. All would have gone well, so it is said, but the offending trotting enthusiast, adopted an air of “I had a right to do it and will do it again,” which got Harry Rouse on his toes, and he “roused” in fair earnest. The question is now being attended to by the club officials. Recognising they have a first-class man on the job, the club will back up the caretaker to a man. It is to be hoped, for the benefit of others who wish to use the Claudelands track at any time, that tho club will not delete any of the training privileges on account of the violation of the standing orders by one man.
