ROXY AND EMPRESS
“MEXICALI ROSE” Barbara Stanwyck appears in an appealing role in ‘‘Mexicali Rose,” which is now being screened at both the Roxy and Empress Theatres. The picture deals with the romantic career of a girl who is driven from the resort of a notorious gambler, played by Sam Hardy. She avenges herself by marrying the gambler’s younger brother, who has been given a good education and kept in ignorance of his brother’s activities, but she does this only after long and difficult trials. The Roxy’s programme includes a number of interesting supporting items, the chief of which is the film record of the famous Sarron-I)onovan boxing - match in "Wellington last Saturday. The film is particularly clear and holds the interest of the audience throughout. It is especially interesting as a supplement to the views of the first Sarron-Donovan fight shown at the Roxy last week, although the second film was taken from much nearer the ring. Good views are also shown of the preliminary bouts.
